Dilapidated III

From my Lincolnville series. Lincolnville is a historic neighborhood in St. Augustine, Florida founded by former slaves in 1866. It was once referred to as "Little Africa" and the "Harlem of the South". In 1964, it was the center of the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stayed in a couple houses in the area.

This series was part of my final assignment for Photo Art Direction. We had the choice to do what we wanted, so I chose to do an art series for a change. In this series I feature architecture that has been neglected in the area. I think they have a lot of character to them. There is also plenty of beautifully restored architecture in the area, but that was not the focus of my series.

The process: These are HDR images. I used three exposures of the same scene (bracketing) and combined those in Photomatix. In that program I also made the images predominantly black & white. I didn't want the scenes to look totally dead and hopeless, so I adjusted the saturation of the highlights and shadows to bring back some of the coloring. In Photoshop, I mostly just tweaked the contrast, although I did add a few shadows to a couple images to make them all have cohesively dramatic lighting.
